US Soldiers Found Dead in Lithuania

Reports indicate that three U.S. Army soldiers from the 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division were discovered deceased following the submersion of their M88 Hercules armored recovery vehicle in a peat bog during a collaborative training exercise near Pabradė, Lithuania, near the Belarus border. Efforts to locate a fourth missing soldier persist, complicated by difficult terrain and extensive international support.

U.S. Soldiers' Fatal Incident

The tragic incident occurred on March 25, 2025, near Pabradė, Lithuania, close to the Belarus border, during a training exercise involving U.S. and Lithuanian forces. A 63-ton M88 Hercules armored recovery vehicle, carrying four U.S. Army soldiers from the 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, sank into a peat bog while attempting to assist another immobilized tactical vehicle. The submerged vehicle was located the following day under approximately 15 feet of water and thick mud, but challenging terrain and conditions hampered immediate recovery efforts. After nearly a week of intensive search and recovery operations, three of the four missing soldiers were found deceased when the vehicle was finally extracted from the swamp.

Challenging Recovery Operation Details

The recovery operation for the submerged M88 Hercules armored vehicle encountered substantial challenges due to the difficult terrain. The vehicle was discovered approximately 15 feet underwater, encased in dense, clay-like mud, which complicated extraction efforts. To address these obstacles, the U.S. Army utilized specialized equipment such as a high-capacity slurry pump, cranes, and over 30 tons of gravel to stabilize the area and facilitate the recovery process.

This multinational effort involved collaboration between U.S. and Lithuanian forces, with significant support from the Polish Armed Forces. The Polish contingent provided 150 personnel, military engineers, water pumps, tracked recovery vehicles, and other critical equipment to aid in the operation. Despite the harsh conditions, the persistent efforts of the recovery teams led to the successful extraction of the vehicle from the peat bog early on March 31, 2025, following nearly a week of intensive operations.

Leaders' Reactions and Condolences

Major General Christopher Norrie of the 3rd Infantry Division conveyed deep sorrow over the loss, referring to the fallen soldiers as valued family members. He reiterated the unwavering commitment to locate the missing fourth soldier, affirming that the search efforts would persist until all personnel are accounted for. Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda also expressed heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased and reaffirmed Lithuania’s dedication to supporting the ongoing search operations.

U.S. Army Europe and Africa Command officially confirmed the tragic incident and is working closely with Lithuanian authorities to manage the situation. This event has drawn significant international attention, underscoring the inherent risks of military training exercises. Both American and Lithuanian officials have emphasized the necessity of a comprehensive investigation to determine the cause of the accident and prevent future occurrences.
